EyeOS is trying to redefine the operating system. It is an open source initiative that aims to create an operating system that is accessible over over the web from anywhere around the world. OuterVillage in its top five strategic technologies for 2008 suggested the need for "enhanced web platforms that deliver applications over the web reducing the need for stand-alone OS's". That is what EyeOS seems to want to deliver on. All you need to do is to login into your eyeOS server with a browser (IE, Firefox, and Opera support only). This will give you access to your documents, music, movies, or any other application. The advantages of using EyeOS are clear: there are no OS compatibility issues, you can access you apps from obsolete computers, share resources from different work sites, users access the same applications forgetting the usual compatibility problems between Office suites or traditional operating systems, being able to continue working even if your browser crashes (just login to EyeOS from a another place). It is a platform independent solution. EyeOS is Open Source, licensed under the GNU Affero Public License version 3 (AGPL3). This license makes the OS completely free for both home and business. The source code is available to anyone and you can update and customize for your particular needs. Download and install instruction for EyeOS are available. The only prerequisites are as follows: Server * Apache Web Server 1.3.x / 2.x. Client * Firefox 2 or higher. Plugins * Adobe Flash 9.x Vassilios _____________________ Vassilios If you enjoyed this posting please subscribe to our RSS feed or submit it to your favorite social networks. Reply |
