The Future of Microsoft and Yahoo! Marriage...

With the recent announcement of the Microsoft bid for Yahoo! all are wondering what this will mean for the Internet landscape. It's obvious that Microsoft has been struggling to compete with the likes of Google and
other online innovators. Microsoft's strategy since its inception has been to acquire technology rather than build or innovate on their own. This will ultimately be their downfall.

Microsoft and Yahoo! merger (assuming it passes) will fail in the long run. The cultures of the two companies are too different. Trying to integrate Yahoo! with Microsoft is like trying to put together two pieces of
the puzzle that don't fit.

Microsoft will go in and squash the talents of Yahoo! developers as well as many of the projects they were working on. You will see Yahoo! mainly open source infrastructure be replaced with Microsoft proprietary
software. Things like zimbra, new developments in PHP, FreeBSD, will be replaced with things like Exchange, hotmail, and .NET, Windows. This will kill what we know of Yahoo! today.

I see what Microsoft is trying to do though. With a deal like this it is clear that they are going after some of the revenue streams that Google plays in. The problem is that Google is a leader and has shown that
consistently with the technologies, products, and services they've introduced. They're able to
adapt quickly and introduce change effectively. Their culture was built around innovation and Microsoft can't buy that.
