Top 20 Open Source Packages - Open Source Census67
vote
The Open Source Census is collaborative project that attempts to collect and share quantitative data relating to the use of open source software in the enterprise. The Open Source Census has a tool called OSS Discovery that scans individual machines and generate anonymous reports regarding what open source software that machine has installed. It is completely voluntary and any individual or company can participate in The Open Source Census. Its a rather ambitious project but one that is necessary if we are to get an accurate picture of how OSS is used within an enterprise. Traditional surveys are not accurate. Enterprises aquire open source software through downloads instead of a purchasing process. Most companies wouldn't be able to provide an accurate assessment of what open source packages are being used within their companies/organizations. Most estimates are way off the actual number of OSS packages being used. This is a new effort that needs more volunteers. They currently have 62 machines being scanned. According to some of their recent data they've ranked the top 20 OSS packages currently installed within the "open source census" demographics. A worthy cause
I hope a lot of people from different areas sign up for this project. I think it could be a big success.
workstation scans
A lot of privacy issues for most companies here. I can't see to many companies allowing a 3rd party gather statistics about their corporate assets....
